Chapter 9

Rathore House,

Karan was reading in his room when Sameer came in.

“Karan, how are you?”

“Good? What are you trying to ask bhai?”

Sameer put his hand over his shoulder, “Something is troubling you since quite some time. I’ve never seen you this silent and distant before. Tell me, what is it?”

“Bhai, I’m good.”

“Chote, you might have grown up but you don’t know how to lie.”

“Trust me bhai, I’m okay.”

“Listen kid, you had all the time in the world to tell her about your feelings and you chose the wrong one. Now move on. Also there are other women in the world. She is not the only one.”

“Bhai, this is not helping, not at all.”

“My bad. Why don’t you try those dating apps kids use these days?”

“I appreciate your effort but I just need some me time.”

Sameer hugged him, “I love you!”

“Say that to Aisha.” Karan got smacked on his head.

Same afternoon

ETF Records Section

Sameer walked in, locked the door. Neha unlocked her gun, “Who’s there?”

“Me!” Sameer walked up to her, “Why are you sitting on the floor?”

She kept her gun aside, “It’s more comfortable as I’m working on the bottom shelves. Now don’t stand on my head Chief, sit down.”

Sameer moved a pile of files and sat down across her, “How much did you finish? Found anything-”

“It’s been only three days Chief! I have finished browsing and categorizing last years’ unsolved cases.”

“That’s good. Commissioner Sir has given some instructions. You have to find cases similar to Sikander’s modus operandi and put them separately. But no one should know that you are actually doing this, especially Rawte.”

“What?”

“Don’t act like you don’t know anything.”

“I don’t understand. Until our last case at Lonavala, you didn’t even believe in the existence of the said person and today you want me to look into his old cases. Wow!”

“We will talk about that later. Get started.”

“I’m not sure if I’m the right person-”

“It is Commissioner Sir’s order. I will give you a list of evidences which will help you mark the cases related to Sikander.” Sameer logged in her laptop, accessed certain confidential files and downloaded a file and showed it to her.

She browsed the file, “Why is there no picture of him? Like he could be around us and we can’t even recognize him, how do we find a person who is just a name which probably is made up?”

“No one has ever seen him, at least not without his mask. And it is said that anyone who sees his face dies almost immediately. So you are right, there is no way to know who he really is.”

“Alright. But I have some questions for you.”

“Come home for some coffee, I will answer you.” Sameer marched out.

Neha browsed the database, “This doesn’t have half the information I have! I hope this is useful in some way.”

~

Evening,

Neha drove to Vikram’s house in Spring Heights.

“Good evening milady!” Vikram opened the door.

“Excuse me?”

“I thought you would like it.”

“You can’t call me milady. It is reserved for one person only.”

“Myra? I know! Guess what I did today?”

“What?” She sat on the couch.

“Read some cheesy love letters of two teenagers! I did not know you were that romantic!”

“Do you have no shame? How could you read something so personal to me?”

“I found a locked box in my cupboard when I was arranging my stuff. I accidentally also found the key and my goodness, the dead flowers and old letters, how could I not spend all day reading them?”

“How dare you do read my letters?”

“Calm down! I just read a few lines from a letter because I was very curious but it was too cheesy, I did not read others. Tell me why keep it here?”

“To save it from being burned. My mom was really angry and upset when she saw the letters. She even went on to say that Myra had charmed me and fed my brain with all nonsense. Mom asked Myra’s parents to change her school and made sure we never see each other again.” She looked at the box nostalgically.

“Ouch! That hurts! Also a classic love story in the making?”

“Well, we pretend that we never met again but we keep in contact regularly. I have lied to my mom for a very long time. Now it’s just routine. So to keep up the pretence, you’re my boyfriend!”

“How long do I have to that though?”

“Tired already? Don’t worry, I’m tired as well. All this lying is just too much, for once I just wanna be myself. When will people appreciate me for who I am, rather than what I pretend to be?”

“If you stop pretending-”

“Can we talk about something else?” Neha picked the box and went into the master bedroom, “Has anyone ever written you a love letter?”

“Ugh-not really.”

“Aw, poor thing, I’ll write you one!”

“No need. I am fine.” Vikram rolled his eyes

“You need to see this!” She grabbed two books from the right corner of the bookshelf and pressed the lever. The bookshelf opened into a secret chamber. She turned the lights on and walked in.

“We set-up our base here.”

Vikram looked around the room, a table, few chairs and three walls were covered with soft-boards, “How many people know about this room?”

“One, two..” She counted on her fingers, “Five or seven. Don’t worry, no one comes here.”

“Alright. You were saying about some confidential files that you accessed today, what’s new?”

“Bring your laptop, I’ll share the file. Go through it and you’ll know. Also make a copy of the file and add the data we have in it.”

“All of that is your job.”

“No, it’s our case, both of us are working on it. You can’t just-”

“I need solid leads to work on the case, I am not doing your database entry job. And I looked into the contents of the micro-chip, I am not sure about the authenticity of the information. It might be a trap. No one can actually have that detailed information passed on so easy.”

“Now you are doubting my informer? What is wrong with you?”

“Informers feed false information, nothing new. We need to be sure that this DRINKS Beverages Co. is really mixing cocaine in beer.”

“The information is a hundred percent authentic, I can guarantee that.”

“Tomorrow morning I will visit the place, confirm the information and then decide.”

~

Next morning

Neha knocked on Vikram’s bedroom door rather loudly, “Wake up princess, the sun is high up in the sky!”

Five minutes later, he came out, “Your mother wakes you up like that?”

“I wish! I am awake since 3 am and you’ve been sleeping till 6?”

“No. I thought you were sleeping, so didn’t disturb.”

“See what all I finished doing, here.”

She opened the secret room, files neatly arranged on the table along with other stationery essentials, and the walls were half-filled with pictures, newspaper clippings and notes. The right wall was titled “VICTIMS”, left wall “ASSOCIATES” and the central wall had only a picture and some details scribbled around it.

“How did you get this picture?”

“After a lot of effort.”

“I can see why you are so fond of him.”

“Not really. He saved my life one too many times and I owe him that. Nothing much. Before we start, this is for you.” She gave him a paper, “Read now.”

Vikram took the paper.

Vikram You have been there for me in the most difficult times, supported me through thick and thin. I am grateful to you for things I can’t even enlist. You are a man of words and I know I can trust you more than anyone else. You value honesty and truthfulness over everything else and that makes you distinctive. You are a smarty but sometimes an ass when you are being overly sarcastic, you say things that are hurtful. But I know you have a heart of gold and you never mean any harm. You are an amazing friend! Thank you for being there for me. He is an old soul a poet’s heart trapped in a warrior’s body N.R. Stay awesome, always! Best wishes, xoxo

“Thank you for such kind words. But that poem doesn’t really fit for me. I’m not a poet.” Vikram kept the letter in his pocket.

“It’s a metaphor for compassionate human you dumdum!” She slapped his arm, “I’m going to take a nap and then off to ETF with those boring files.”

~

Rawte Mansion,

Arjun was searching for his old diary when he came across an old broken mechanical pencil wrapped in golden tape and he drifted down the memory lane.

“What have you done?” 12 year old Arjun shouted.

6 year old Neha looked at him with teary eyes, holding the broken pieces of his mechanical pencil.

Suchitra came in hearing his loud voice, “Arjun? What happened?”

“She broke my pencil” He whined.

“Oh! Neha beta why did you break his pencil?” Suchitra asked softly and lifted Neha in her arms and wiped her tears.

“It was on the table.. I wanted to see how it .. it works..” Neha said sobbing, “I opened it and.. and then small things fell down..I did not break it..”

“Ok, now say sorry to your bhaiya and tell him you will not do it again.”

“Sorry bhaiya. Will not do it again.” She said holding her ears.

Arjun crossed his arms and stared at her, “Aai, she broke my pencil! It was my favourite pencil. Her sorry won’t fix my pencil.”

“You are right my child. But it is just a pencil. I you will get a new one. She has said sorry and you should accept it.” Suchitra moved her hand through his hair.

“Okay. Last time you little devil. If you touch my stuff again, I won’t spare you.”

“Itsh okie!” She flashed a toothy grin and ran out.

“Arjun beta,” Suchitra gave him a glass of water and made him sit beside her, “you have to be a little more considerate when you talk to your sister. She is very young and curious. You were just the same at her age. I understand it was your favourite pencil but that does not mean you can be rude to your sister, right?”

Arjun nodded slightly.

“Beta, always remember that things are not more important than people. You can always buy new things but people cannot be replaced. Another thing Arjun, if you see that your sister is doing something she should not be doing, you should stop her. But don’t shout at her like you did a while back. Explain it nicely and make her understand her mistake. Shouting won’t help anyone.”

“Aai, I understand. I will be careful.”

“Good. You should also apologize to Neha, you were very harsh on her.”

“I will.”

Arjun took his phone and called Neha, “Good morning! When are you coming home?”

“Morning!” Neha said in a sleepy voice, “What home?”

“You’re still sleeping? This late?”

“It was a long night. I am awake now.”

“I will come home when I feel like. See you later, alligator!” She disconnected the call.

“What happened?” Vikram asked.

“I don’t know what I am doing is right or not. It’s all so messed up, I can’t even..”

“If you feel right in the heart, do it.”

“That was very helpful!” She tied her hair in a bun and got up.

ETF Records Section

Arjun walked into the records room and saw Neha sitting amidst piles of files, “Goodness, how are you working in such a mess Neha?”

“It is organised. Why are you here though?” She asked without looking up from the file.

“Rathore asked me to check if you’re doing your work, properly.”

She frowned, “Come with a better excuse tomorrow, chief was here 15 minutes ago.”

“Yeah..right.. uh..its just that I wanted to say..that..I- I am sorry. I should not have said-”

“I don’t wanna talk ‘bout it. I have a lot of work to do, please excuse me.”

“Neha..”

“Sir please. This is a professional space, let it be that way.”

~

Midnight,

DBC Manufacturing Unit

Neha and Vikram were dressed in their black stealth suits, decked with weapons, ready for the raid.

“There are about 15 people in there. Information is confirmed. We find and destroy the consignment. I’m taking the right side, cover me from left.” Vikram briefed and sneaked in.

Vikram knocked at the Manager’s cabin. He sat across the manager, put his gun on the table, “Where is your warehouse?”

“Who are you? How did you get in here? I’m calling the guards.” The manager picked up his phone but Vikram stuck a knife in his hand.

“Don’t waste the precious few minutes you got. Answer my questions and your death will be easy.” Vikram unlocked his gun.

“I don’t know anything.”

“Don’t waste your time, you have less than five minutes, we have planted bombs in the entire unit.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Showtime.” Vikram said, a few seconds later they heard a blast, “That’s one of the boiler, soon the others will follow.”

Neha had set up the explosives all over the manufacturing unit and waited for signal. She heard the footsteps approaching. She peeked from the wall and saw a familiar face coming towards her. She muted her earpiece and leaned against the wall.

Aryan saw the shadow on opposite wall and walked up to it. He pulled out his gun but saw the peeking eyes, “Why didn’t you inform me you were coming tonight?”

“I didn’t have the time, sorry- please leave before we blow up this place.”

“I’ll meet you soon. Something big is being planned, be careful.” Aryan left.

Another man came behind her, she shot him on point blank and hid behind the wall. Vikram came to her shortly after. “Who did you let go?”

“No one.”

He pinned her against the wall, “I saw a shadow leaving. Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not lying” She winced, “There was no one here.”

He looked in her eyes, “Let’s leave.”

They got into the car and drove past while the building was in flames. Vikram pulled out a diary from his jacket and began reading.

“What is in the diary?” Neha looked at him.

“A list of suppliers and distributors, including a written confession. Concentrate on driving.”

“Read out loud, I can drive and listen. It’s brain mapping.”

“Please look at the road and drive.”

“You need not worry, I know where we are going. It’s called multitasking.” She winked.

“There is a truck coming at us from the wrong side.”

“There is a truck coming at us- THEREs a truck- Fuck!” She saw the speeding truck, quickly changed the gears, drove in reverse and halted as the truck came across them and dashed into a tree at the side of the road. They got out of the car to look at the damages. “Not a scratch. See I told you, I can-”

He covered her mouth with his palm, “Shut up! We almost died.”

“There’s not a single scratch on your body. You should be thankful that I saved your life.” She shrugged. He pulled out a gun and pointed at her.

“Shoot me if you got guts, you coward!”

He shot the bullet right past her ear. She looked flabbergasted.

“I value my life more than anything else.” Vikram blew the top of the gun.

She got into the car and drove away.

“That went a lot better than expected.” Vikram said to himself and started walking.

10 minutes later she came back and stopped behind him.

“You want to run over me now?”

“Get in the car. I don’t leave my friends stranded on road in the middle of the night. Unlike you, I know how to be nice to my friends.”

“I will not sit with you if you’re driving. Let me drive.”

“This is my car. I drive it.”

“Then go off, I know the way back.”

She got down and came to him, “Oh my god Princess! Stop whining. Get into the car now.”

He moved towards driver’s seat, “I will show you how to drive properly, without getting yourself killed.”

She held his hand, “No! My Car, I drive.”

He twisted her hand and pressed her against the car, “I don’t wish to die in a car accident. Please.”

She tried to hit with her elbow, “Leave me!”

He blocked her blow and locked both her hands behind her back. “Don’t try. You can’t win me in a fight.”

“I hate you!”

“The feeling is mutual.” He shoved her in the back seat and drove away.

After a few minutes she jumped to the passenger seat.

“Wild-ass bi’ch!” He cursed under his breath.

She picked the water bottle and drank to her heart’s content. She turned to him with a sweet smile, “Have I told you that you look really cute when you’re angry?”

“No.”

“That face is just priceless.” She blew a flying kiss at him and he rolled his eyes.

“Do you know, you are such an amazing person that I’d kill for you.”

“Okay.”

“Don’t hurt my feelings like that! I know you have a heart of gold but it is covered in dust because of some reasons. I can shake that dust away and make your heart shine brighter.” She grinned, “You know when I smile like this, I make all men’s hearts shatter and they just give it to me.”

“If you’re saying all of that just so that I will let you drive, not happening.”

“Just for once, let your heart do what it really wants. There is a lot of goodness in life. You can’t run from everything ‘cause it went wrong that one time.”

“Stop distracting me. I am driving.”

“I’m also driving you crazy.”

He halted the car, “If you don’t stop now, I shoot you for real.”

She stared out of window, “There really is no goodness left. Humanity committed suicide.”

They reached home after a long silent drive.

“Come on now, stop sulking.” Vikram opened the door.

“If you treat me like that, ever again, remember that even I know how to shoot.”

“You pissed me off, I couldn’t-”

“Shut up!”

~

Two days later,

Afternoon

Neha was sitting at a corner table with a Subway sandwich when a fair, tall man dressed in a long trench coat walked in and sat next to her.

“Hello! Sorry for being late, got stuck in some work.” He said in his deep, husky voice and gave her a bouquet of wild flowers.

“Hi Alec!” She looked at the bouquet, “The flowers are really pretty! Thank you! I was hungry so I ordered already.”

Alec smiled at her, “That’s fine, but how is eating an entire loaf of bread healthy?”

She frowned, “Don't talk like doc, you're supposed to be the bad guy!”

“People think I am a bad man but what have I really done? I never get my hands dirty, I only instruct my people to carry out certain things. I’m not like those multi-billionaire companies that are killing the nature and call it fair-trade. I don’t go around enslaving people to work for me and call it economy. I run a simple business of transportation. I only kill a few assholes here n’ there, more like have them killed, to be precise. I am only helping mother nature by reducing some weight of these useless people. And you still think I’m bad? Come on!”

Neha had finished eating half of her sub, “That’s a fair point.”

Alec tucked the strands of her hair behind ear, “Your hair is eating your food!”

“Its alright.” She adjusted her hair to cover her scarred cheek.

“Your scars don’t make you ugly. Remember when Atticus wrote, ‘She conquered her demons and wore her scars like wings.’ I bet he was talking about you.”

“Cheesy. Not bad.”

“Okay, what about this- it was her chaos that made her beautiful.”

“Nope. Finish eating and then I’ll give you a book, read out real poem from there.”

“As you wish mademoiselle!”

“What is that on your hands?” She pointed at his bruises.

“A kitten was stuck in barbed wire fence and thorny bushes. I got these bruises while saving it.”

“You saved a kitten? WOW! You never cease to amaze me.”

“Yes and you will love this baby!” He fetched a tiny black kitten from his jacket.

“Oh my God!! This is the cutest floof I’ve ever seen!”

“Keep it.”

“Me? No. I-”

“I really want you to keep it.”

“Alec, you are so good, man! I can’t thank you enough!” She took the kitten.

“You have helped me in realising that there is still some goodness in me. I had forgotten about it till I met you. You made me see all the wrong that I had been doing all this time. Had it not been you, I would not have realised that I-.. Now I have decided to leave this all and start my life afresh.”

“That’s a wise choice but don’t give me the credit, I haven’t done anything. It’s all you.”

“I have decided that I will wrap up my business and go to some distant country and begin a new life, away from all this bloodshed. I made this empire from scratch and now I want to tear it apart, brick by brick. I will give you all the information you need and you will have your city free from certain crimes. Deal?”

“Why do you not surrender instead?”

“Because I know people will have me dead before I open my mouth. I know I can trust you. You won’t abuse the information for any personal gains. You will get a chance to prove that you are a great officer - name and fame.”

She observed his eyes, “No. I will consider this deal only if you guarantee the safety of my family because working for you will mean making a lot of enemies for myself.”

“You have my word. No one will harm your family. I guarantee it. If anyone tries, my men will be at guard.”

“Sounds good.”

“But, in case you have second thoughts and decide to double-cross me,” He showed a picture on his phone, “I will reveal his true identity. You are smart enough to know what happens next.”

She saw the picture and felt her blood boiling but took a sharp breath, “What if I decline the deal?”

“I don’t see a reason to do that. You get to free the city from crime which is your primary goal. It is just being made easy by me. Your family stays safe, that’s a bonus. What more do you need?”

“Right. But before I tell you my decision, I want you to read a poem from this diary.” She took out a leather diary from her purse and gave it to him.

“You’ve written them?” He flipped through the pages.

“Some of them, others are my favourites, copied in my handwriting.”

“This is ‘Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven’ by W. B. Yeats” He read the poem and placed diary on table.

“You are surprisingly good at reading poetry.” She kept the diary in her handbag.

“Yes. Things you do to woo the woman you like.” He winked, “I really like you.”

“A lot of people do. Thanks.”

“So, have you decided?”

“Yes. I am in.” She smiled, “Hope nothing goes wrong.”

“It won’t if this remains between the two of us.”

“I can keep a secret.”

“And your secret is safe with me.”

Her phone buzzed, “I have to leave now, work calls. See you later.”

“Bye!”

~

Evening,

Spring Heights,

“Vikram!” She opened the door and walked in.

“Here you are, two days later. Not angry anymore?” Vikram kept his book aside.

“I brought his fingerprints.” She turned away silently putting the fingerprints on the table.

“Are you still upset about the other night?” She looked up and then went back to doing her work.

“If you think I’ll say sorry then you’re wrong. I wasn’t at fault, you were.”

“Don’t justify your shitty behaviour. It won’t kill you if you say sorry. You have hurt me and I don’t take it lightly.”

“You almost killed us! Emotions are an impediment in our line of work. You can’t let your emotions cloud your judgement.”

Neha shook her head and walked in the chamber. She found a box containing a new diary, post-its, highlighters and coloured pens. “For me?”

“Yes.”

She smiled and kept the box away, “I met Alec today. Says he wants to start afresh. Presented me a deal to give all his information in return of safe passage.”

“Sounds like an amazing trap.”

“What if it is not? See, I get to know about his associates and all the others involved, we track them, put them behind the bars and when it’s time, he also goes to jail. Pitch perfect!”

“He’s not the type of man to be trusted.”

“I got nothing to lose.”

“Think it through, take your time.”

“I’ll talk to Sameer bhai. Hopefully he has answers.”

~

Rathore House

Neha rang the doorbell. Karan opened the door and welcomed her. “Hi!”

“Hello! Is Samie bro home?”

“Yes. Please sit. What would you like to have, tea or coffee?”

“Coffee would do! Thanks.”

Sameer came in, “You’re early.”

“Yep. Could we talk in a private space?”

Sameer took her in the study room, “Ask whatever you want to-”

“Be very honest and tell me, do you really believe that,” she inhaled sharply, “Sikander exists?”

“I do.”

“Since when?”

“What?”

“Have you always believed or is it a recent development?”

“I always believed there was someone who-” Sameer paused, “but I’m still not sure if Sikander is a real person or just an alias.”

“Why is it that I have been asked to gather the old cases details?”

“It’s confidential but all I can say is orders from higher authorities, not my decision. Even I was surprised as to why are you being asked to do this. You are a bit inexperienced for such an important and difficult case.”

“Well, I can’t be as experienced as you, considering your age, Uncle Sam! But I am trained at Scotland Yard and under world’s best secret agents.”

“You do realise what is at stake here, Neha. It is not going to be easy.”

“I had a different conversation in mind but perhaps we are not ready for it.”

“What is it?”

“The evening of 2nd August 2012” Neha whispered.

Sameer looked haunted by a ghost from past.

“I’ll see you later.” Neha walked out leaving him alone.

~

Later that night,

Rawte Mansion,

Neha knocked the door, “Bhaiya, there’s something I have to say..”

“Yes” Arjun made her sit beside him.

“Bhaiya,” She took a deep breath, “I have been trying, really hard, you know. But I – I can’t get those words out of my head. You know I really tried to think of other things, but it’s not working. Every time I try to forget it, you come to me with an apology. And I am reminded of it once again.”

“Neha-”

“Let me finish. Bhaiya, honestly, you need to stop apologizing. I understand that you are sorry for whatever you said. But the thing is I can’t forget it. I will, someday, eventually be able to forgive you, maybe. But I will never forget what all you said. I tried, you know, to act like everything is normal and tried to think that nothing like that ever happened at all. It didn’t work. Honestly, I just want to go on and pretend that this never happened. That is what I am doing, will be doing. It’s just all so messed up, I don’t know what I’m saying. Do you understand? It’s all so messed up, I can’t even- ” She felt a sharp pain in her throat, holding back her tears. She closed her eyes and covered her face with hands to hide her tears.

Arjun patted her back and held her close.

After crying for a while she wiped her tears and looked at him. “I know you are not bad, but not so good either.”

“I don’t deserve-”

“I know you love me more than anyone, that’s all I need.”

“Of course.. I love you my child!”

“I know you do.”

~

A week later,

ETF Conference room,

“Okay! Listen up folks!” Neha announced, “Tomorrow is bhaiya’s birthday and I’m hosting a small surprise party. So make sure none of you wish him in the morning. Everyone is invited home in the evening but no gifts allowed. Alright?”

“A birthday without gifts? Not fair.” Sakshi pouted.

“About that-” Neha took out a handmade card from her file, “Write something nice for him. I know it’s difficult but y’all sweeties can think of something good. I want you guys to finish this by today evening. And make sure it remains a secret.”

“Done!” The team said in unison.

~

Next morning

Rawte Mansion

The alarm buzzed, Arjun turned it off with his eyes closed.

“Arjun! Wake up! Its 10 o’clock!” Roshni pulled the sheets.

“Roshu! It’s not even 8! Five minutes!” Arjun hid his head in pillow.

Roshni took the pillow, “Arjun, it’s your birthday, is this how you want the year to start, sleepyhead?”

Arjun put his arm around her, “This is how I want it to be!” He was about to kiss her when they heard a baby cry.

“Anu is crying! Let me go!” She tried to escape.

“Aai says that kids should cry, it opens their vocal chords.”

“Whatever!” Roshni pushed him and went to check on her baby.

Arjun sighed and went behind her.

“Arjun, pass the diaper.”

“Give her to me, I’ll change.” Arjun picked the diaper. She nodded and went into kitchen.

Arjun began changing the diaper, “Princess, tell me, could you not stay quiet for a few minutes?”

6 month old Arnika yawned loudly. “Are you mocking me?” She chuckled. Arjun pecked her forehead and patted her back, within a few minutes she was asleep. He placed her in the cradle and rocked it gently.

“Roshu!” Arjun walked into kitchen and embraced her, “Before the kids wake up again, let me have my moment of peace.” Roshni kissed his lips softly.

The alarm buzzed again.

Arjun was combing his hair when Neha barged in, “Hola brother! Wish you a very happy birthday!” She placed a tray on the table and hugged him.

“Thank you!” He cut the cupcake in half and fed her.

“Tastes amazing! I’m a good chef!” She fed him and smeared the leftover chocolate on his face. “Now open the gift.” She wiped her hands and pulled out her camcorder.

He unwrapped the gift and looked at the handmade journal, “You made this?”

“Obviously!”

He opened the first page, it was a black and white picture of a new-born. A handwritten message below it read- ‘You might not be perfect, but are smart, strong and the most reliable person I know.’

He turned the pages, more pictures from his childhood, every picture had a caption, some funny, others meaningful and deep.

“You gon’ take forever? Flip the pages quick. I don’t have an entirety.”

“Stop recording.”

“No, this is treasure! Now flip through, read later.”

“Why would you select the most embarrassing pictures?”

“You are an embarrassment, I can’t help.”

“Shut up!” Arjun turned the next pages with pictures of Roshni and their kids. He gently touched the picture and a tear trickled down his cheek.

“Bhaiya?” She wiped off the tear.

“This is the most beautiful gift Neha. Thank you so much!”

“There’s more. Wait for it.” She opened her laptop and played a video.

“Hello papa!” 4 year old Aryan said cheekily.

“Hey dad! ‘Sup?” Arnika joined.

“We will perform something for you!” Aryan and Arnika said dramatically and made a performance.

“This is amazing!”

“It is! Our parents have also sent some message recordings for you!”

“I will watch them later!”

“Cool! Enjoy your day! Toodle-oo!” She blew a kiss and walked out.

~

Evening,

Neha was dressed in a pastel pink chiffon ball gown, hair tied in a half up half down manner.

“Is this a theme party?” Vikram asked.

“No Princess, I haven’t worn this dress ever, thought it’d be a good idea.” She wore heels, walked a few steps and stumbled twice.

“Do you really need to wear hee-” Neha tripped over him and before he could balance, they fell on the couch.

“Neha everything is ready-” Karan came in and saw them on the couch, “Sorry, I’ll come later.”

“No! It’s ok” Neha got up and straightened her dress, “these heels are terrible”

“It doesn’t matter, no one will see it!” Vikram grumbled.

“It’s for the Look!” Her black kitten meowed, “Even Nyx agrees!”

“Wearing 5 inch high heels and tripping thrice for the Look is stupid.”

Neha rolled her eyes, “Karan, you were saying something?”

“Yeah, everything is set, we are waiting for you. Bhai is on his way, will be here in five minutes.”

“Cool! What if I wear my Heelys and slide down?”

“No! NO!” Vikram protested. Neha put on the shoes and hurt her knee at the table corner as she slid past. “Never mind, will wear something else.”

“Why do you do this yourself?”

“I learn from my mistakes. That’s the motto of my life.”

“Did you wear those heels because you wanted to look taller than me strawberry shortcake?”

“Call me strawberry shortcake one more time and I swear-”She shook her head, “Just get my stilettos from the top right corner.”

“Quit it!”

“My momma didn’t raise no quitter”

“Not a quitter but surely an idiot.” Vikram chuckled.

She stared at him. They heard the car honking, “Shit! They’re here! Turn the lights off!” She looked around in darkness and heard faint noises, “Fuck! It’s too dark, is anyone-”

Vikram turned his phone light on, “Don’t panic, everything is alright.”

She held his arm and walked towards the hall.

Arjun opened the door and turned on the lights. He found the ETF team waiting for him. The dinner table was beautifully decorated with scented candles, flowers and food.

“No balloons?” He looked up and saw a large balloon in the centre, filled with confetti.

“I know you’re not five so one balloon would do!” Neha uncovered the cake, “The cake would be destroyed by the weight of thirty candles, so just one-”

“What?”

“Subtle reminder that twenty years later you’ll be fifty!” She grinned. Arjun crossed his arms and glared.

“The candle is melting, blow it. But wait! Make a wish first!”

Arjun closed his eyes momentarily.

“What did you wish?”

“That you keep your mouth shut for rest of the evening.”

“Alright. I’ll do that.”

Arjun blew the candle and cut the cake while everyone sang ‘Happy birthday to you’.

They sat at the dinner table.

“The pasta is delicious!”

“Thank you!” Vikram bowed a little with smile.

“Wouldn’t be possible without me-”

“Don’t even talk. You invited me for the party and made me cook this entire time while you couldn’t choose what shoes to wear.”

“Why is no one talking about the cake? I put in so much effort to make it, also burnt my fingers-”

“No one asked you to do it!” Arjun said.

“I didn’t raise you to be an ungrateful child!”

“No gran’ma, you didn’t!”

Neha was about to pick a piece of pizza but Vikram took it first. Neha pouted, “You’ve stolen a pizza my heart!”

“There are more pieces.”

“That was cheesy but you’re grate”

“No, please!” Vikram grumbled, “One more pun and I swear-”

“What? You gon’ break up? I thought we were mint to be together.”

“Never mind.”

“Neha, what are you high on?” Sameer asked.

“Weed! I wish! But I’m completely sober since last thirty two days.”

“I hate to admit that your drunk self is more tolerable than sober one.”

“That means I can drink now?”

“No!”

There was a loud thunder rumbling.

“I told you, it’s gonna rain tonight!” Neha smirked.

“You are not going out in rain.” Arjun stated.

“No. I will just bring Rocky and Sandy in.” She went out and brought her dogs in, “Stay here and don’t bother Nyx, alright?” They nodded and she back in the garden.

“What are you doing?”

“Ritual sacrifice of the season!” She yelled from outside.

“What’s that?”

“Jumping in puddles of first rain.”

~

A deserted street

Sikander was strolling when it started raining. He stood under a tree and a few street dogs were barking. He approached the dogs and drove them away. One of the dog was protectively covering a bundle near the large dustbin. He went to take a closer look and found a new born baby crying. The dog barked at him but he took the baby in his arms and walked away with it.

~

Later that night

Neha was sitting in her room near the window, silently sniffling. It was drizzling and little raindrops fell on her with gently blowing breeze.

Vikram sat next to her, “Neha? Are you alright?”

She leaned on his shoulder, “I’ve never said this to anyone. My gran’ma used to say that a woman’s heart should be vast like ocean, holding everything inside. Don’t let the ocean spill or it will destroy your little world. I don’t care about her stupid advice anymore. I’ll tell you something I’ve never told anyone.”

“Go on, I’m all ears.”

She took a deep breath, “Five years is a long time, or so I thought. It was my 18th birthday. Maulik had gifted this dress to me, his first design. My bhau had planned a big surprise for me. That evening, I was with my friends, giving them a treat when the news channel flashed news of bhau’s death in an accident. I rushed to his place. I was stunned to see the decorations. Must’ve spent entire night putting it up. There were a lot of people. Then a group of uniformed officers brought in a dead body. They said it was my bhau. Bhaiya had just came in. He tried to see the face but couldn’t. It was badly burnt. I happened to glance at the hands and I knew this body wasn’t ours. I tried to tell everyone, nobody believed me. They thought I was in shock. I was not. How could I not recognise the hands that taught me how to hold a pen, how to fight. The hands that supported me in everything I did. I came back home. I saw mom and dad were fighting. Mom was screaming at dad. My mom never raised her voice this high, she was screaming at dad, he just sat there, clutching his left shoulder. I called in the ambulance. Dad suffered from a major attack. They performed a surgery, saved him. I spent all night by his side. They say being an adult is not easy. Never knew it would be this hard on day one. Everything was different the next morning. I felt like I aged a hundred years in one night. I didn’t cry, I couldn’t. I was surrounded by people but I’ve never felt so alone. I never wore this dress but I thought today I’d wear it and everything will be normal. No. Nothing will ever be normal in my life. Fun fact? Not even I am normal.” She laughed sadly. “Five years may be a long time but it feels like all that happened five minutes ago. Never mind. Thanks for listening, have a good sleep.” She smiled at him and snuggled in her bed.

Vikram looked at the pouring rain.

“Ma, baba, good night!” “Good night beta!” 15 year old Vikram went to his room upstairs. It had been raining for past three days. He was barely asleep when he heard his mother’s scream. He sat upright in his bed, his heart pounding and body numb. He heard his father’s scream and rushed downstairs. He found both his parents lying in pool of their blood at the doorstep. There was no one around them. Bullets had pierced their vital organs and they died before reaching the hospital.

Chapter 8

City Hospital

10 minutes after Neha was declared dead.

Vikram turned to the Nurse, “In ten minutes, her brother Rahul will be here, you will take her to their home. Tell them she is sleeping, and not to disturb her. Keep the blood pint and saline on to keep up the façade and do not leave her alone at all until I’m back. Get it?”

“But she’s dead, so why?”

“Maintain she’s not till I have your kid safe. Also, do not try anything, if I can save your son, I won’t hesitate to do otherwise.” Vikram said calmly.

“No! Please! I’ll do whatever you say.”

“We will pay you double the amount they promised you. So, no mistakes allowed.”

~

Presently,

Rajlakshumi Textile Mill

Aisha took a deep breath, wiped her tears and sat beside Arjun to console him, “Arjun sir, you have to stay strong. We have to go and be with her now. Please.”

“It is all my fault… I should have never-” Arjun said in a shaky voice.

“Sir please, we have to go!” Aisha requested.

Five of them drove to the Hospital.

“Neha was taken home two hours ago by Rahul sir.” The receptionist told them.

“Alright.” Aisha said.

~

Rawte Mansion

Vikram opened the door and looked at their tear-dried, puffy eyes and sad faces.

“Where’s Neha?” Arjun asked.

“Shh.. she’s sleeping.” Vikram said softly.

“Sleeping?”

“Yes. She’s sleeping, first room on the left.”

“But you said she die-” Sakshi tried to intervene.

“We thought she did, you see, these poisons sometimes play with the host system and we can’t really determine what’s happening. But she’s better now.” Vikram reasoned.

Meanwhile Arjun sprinted to the room, looked at her sleeping self, a pint of saline in her right hand, left hand connected to the monitor showing blood-pressure. He sat down beside her, his heart still racing wild. A lone tear trickled from his eye.

He held her hand carefully to not disturb the IV-set, “I should not have left you alone.”

“Do not sit at my grave and weep.” Neha said in a very soft voice, “I am not dead. I am asleep.”

“Shut up you idiot!” Arjun scoffed and she closed her eyes.

“I told you not to wake her up, why don’t you listen?” Vikram said as he came in.

“I did not. She’s still sleeping.”

“As if I didn’t hear her misquote Mary Elizabeth Frye, Do not stand at my grave and weep. She closed her eyes as soon as she saw me come in.” Vikram stated plainly.

“Is she okay?” Aisha asked with teary eyes.

“Alive, yes.” Vikram responded.

“Shree, I told you, this had to be a lie. See! She is here with us.” Chotu said in a cheerful tone.

Shree said cheekily, “Chotu, you managed to bribe Bappa and he gave up! I love you re!!”

“Oh my goodness!!” Vikram sighed, “What did this asshole do to get so much of love?” and received murderous glares from everyone.

“I will physically fight you if you say that, take your words back, right now!” Aisha threatened in a low voice.

“I like it.” Vikram replied with a smile and pissed off Aisha.

“Guys!” Sakshi interrupted, “We should go home now, it is very late.”

Arjun bade them goodbye, “Thank you-”

Aisha cut him short, “This team is our family sir. Don’t thank us. Take care!”

~

Sakshi reached home and made a call and said bitterly, “She is alive.”

“Good. You are warned, do not pull off any such stunt ever again.” He warned, “If you hurt her, I will kill you. You are only supposed to keep an eye on her and report what she is doing. Nothing else.”

“I think you have forgotten that she was the reason you brother was killed.”

“He deserved it. Do what you are asked to properly, this time.”

~

“Good morning! How are you feeling now?” Vikram asked.

“Alive?” Neha said quietly, “my body is still aching..”

“The poison was quite strong indeed. The report mentions Aconitum.”

“Ooh!” Neha said and tried to sit upright. “You lied to me about that allergic reaction?”

“I had to make sure you did not panic.”

Rahul and Arjun came in with breakfast and begin eating in front of her.

“Are you two eating peanut-butter & jam sandwiches? Where’s mine??” Neha yells.

“You are on a detox diet dear, no bread for a week.” Vikram answered, “Only fruits and vegetables. Have some juice for now.”

She looked him and muttered, “Fucker!” then turned at her brothers with a puppy face,“Give me PB&J sandwich please!!”

“Take!” Rahul said and tossed an apple towards her, “an apple a day…”

“I hate you all!” She said and munched the apple, “No, not you,” she winked at Vikram, “I love you, partner!”

“Detox diet is still compulsory. You’re not getting away.”

“But…”

“Don’t even try. I will call your mom and tell her-”

“No!” She shouted, “I’m already locked in her room, don’t give me more nightmares!”

“Good to know that someone actually knows who you are scared of.” Rahul added fuel to the fire.

“I’m not scared of mum.”

“Not at all!” Arjun teased.

“Get out!!” Neha screamed.

~

In a small room, with one big light hanging in the center, a man was tied on the chair. Aryan walked in with a 15 year old Neha.

“How long has he been here?” Aryan asked.

“15 hours”

“Did he talk?”

“Not a word.”

“Let’s try again.” Aryan said and sat on the table in front of him. “Ask your question dear.”

“When and where will the consignment of those girls arrive?”

Aryan ripped the tape off his mouth, “Answer.”

“Why? You want to be one of them?” the man sneered at her and received a tight slap from Aryan.

“If you don’t start talking in five, you shall- nevermind, I won’t describe, one.. two mili from this” Aryan gave a small glass bottle and a syringe.

“Just two mili not more?”

“Dead men tell no tales dear. four”

“You didn’t say three!!” the man was getting restless.

“Ten.” Aryan said and signaled her to give him a dose. She hesitated for a bit but received a reassuring nod from him and injected the dose. “You have about thirty minutes to tell before the full effect of the poison kicks in. That is you will be having convulsions, extreme body-ache and severe dehydration. If you choose to remain silent, another dose will be given but trust me you will suffer severely for 8-9 hours before you actually die. I can guarantee a very slow and painful death to you.”

“What is in the mix?” She asked inquisitively.

“Aconitum and ricin put together. This is my first test before I perfect the formula though! I think we will have a good experiment.”

“Do what you feel like, I’m not going to tell you anything.” The man said haughtily.

Aryan looked at him for a moment then turned to Neha, “Remember, you asked if an aerosol spray could be used as a flamethrower?” She nodded excitedly. “Go, get a mosquito spray, a candle and a lighter. I will demonstrate how to do it safely.”

She came back after a few minutes with all three things. Aryan kept the spray in the middle of the table, candle few inches ahead of it, placed such that the flame would be directed towards the man, who was getting restless now.

“What are you doing?” He asked nervously sweating.

“Science experiment for the kid.” Aryan said and sprayed the mosquito spray on him to check the range, then brought it ahead. “Lighter.”

“No!!” The man screamed, “I’ll tell you everything I know.”

“Too late man. I have to conduct the experiment now.”

“No! I swear I will give you all the details, please. My body is already burning on the inside.”

“I will demonstrate the flamethrower some other time, start noting whatever this bastard has to say.” Aryan said.
~

Neha had been reliving a distant memory when Vikram brought in a box full of salines, injections and other necessary items. He was setting up the next saline for her.

“You said nurses do this, not doctors.”

“After what happened last night, I cannot trust anyone.” Vikram replied while giving her a multi-vitamin injection.

“Did you find out who was behind it?”

“Who else could it be?”

“Sikander?” She whispered, “Nope! He would never hurt me.”

“Just because he saved your life once does not mean he would not hurt you. He did not know who you were when-”

“He loves me. You don’t understand, he would never hurt me. He promised that and he is a man of his words.”

“Did your parents not teach you to not believe strangers and criminals? You have enough experience to know what happens if you trust the wrong person.”

“You need not remind me.” Neha said sternly.

“Evidence indicates it was Sikander. Believe it or not.”

~

ETF Office

Sameer and Arjun were going through the evidences collected from Rajlakshumi Textile Mill.

“Sir,” Liza came in the evidence room with reports, “The cocaine samples from the Lonavala case, Mill and Neha’s medicine drugs, all match perfectly.” She produced a small crumpled piece of paper, “Found this in the hand of that dead boss.”

Arjun straightened the paper and found a red S on it and recognized it, his eyes turned red in rage and he held the paper in front of Sameer, “I made this connection in Lonavala but you did not believe me!”

“Arjun calm down.” Sameer said, trying to maintain his own temper.

“He poisoned my Neha and you want me to calm down?” Arjun yelled.

“Rawte! Stop shouting.” Sameer roared.

“What is going on?” Commissioner Coelho was on a surprise visit when he saw both of them fighting.

“Sir we have evidence linking him. I have to find him.” Arjun requested.

“A piece of paper is your evidence Arjun? Are you serious?” Coelho questioned.

“Sir, please, I will find more evidence, give me-”

“Arjun, you are not authorized for this. Have patience.”

“Three years I have been waiting.”

“You have to wait.” Coelho said authoritatively and left.

~

Three days later,

Neha was adamant to go out of the house.

“Please Vik! I’ve been home for more than ten days no, let me go out.”

“It has been three days Neha, you cannot exert yourself like this. You have to take rest.”

“But I just want to visit the temple.”

“You got one in your house, pray here.”

“You don’t understand, it is important for me to be there. I go to the temple every year on this day without fail. I have to go.”

“I will come with you.”

“But you don’t believe in God and never visit temples.”

“I will wait in the car, you finish your visit in fifteen minutes and we immediately return home.”

“You are not my bodyguard, and honestly, I don’t need one, but thanks for your concern.”

“Your safety is important. You cannot take any chances.”

“I have two Rottweiler pups at my guard, you need not worry.”

“You cannot take them in public places, they’re dangerous.”

“My babies won’t hurt anyone, unless I ask them to.”

“It is unethical. I will be coming with you, keep your pups home.”

She sighed, “Fine. Tag along. We will make a quick visit to ETF, pick some files related to our case.”

“Might as well solve a case or two.”

“Shut up sarcastic bitch!”

~

Same evening,

Ganesha Temple

Neha was dressed in a simple white cotton salwar-kameez with a pink silk dupatta. She offered flowers and coconut at the altar and went around the temple twice. She stopped behind the temple where an ascetic had been sitting. She sat in front of him with her hands folded in a namaste and bowed.

“God bless you, my child” the ascetic smiled and blessed her, “In life, one must be cautious that behind every action, there is a will and behind every will there is a valued judgement. The desire that supports one’s action arises out of mind which is a store-house of ideas and memories and everything that one feels and desires is conceived in mind. If you control your mind, you control your life.” He gave her prasad, “I know you like almonds more than cashews. Stay blessed.”

She took the two laddus, bowed again and left.

She sat in the car and gave a bit of laddu to the driver and to Vikram.

“What took you so long?” Vikram asked.

“I was barely gone for 15 minutes, did you not see the rush? Give me those tissues.”

“What are you doing?” Vikram asked as he saw her breaking the laddu with almond pieces.

“Found it!” she pulled out a small chip carefully folded it in a tissue. “Keep it safe with you for now.”

They reached ETF, Neha went in to get her files and saw everyone staring at her, ‘Everyone fancies my pink dupatta!’. She packed two files and a few envelops in her bag and went to meet Shree at his workstation.

“Hello Shree!” She waved at him.

“Umm, hi! How are you?” Shree asked hurriedly.

“Good. Being given 6 salines a day. My puppers are my only entertainment. Where’s everyone?”

“Busy with a case.” He said without looking up.

“Shree?! Is everything o-” she paused as she looked at the screen, three pictures in the mail with caption ‘Some rare beauty pics, enjoy. ;) Karan R.’ She double clicked on the image to open it while Shree tried to stop her. “Oh” She bit her lip and muttered, “That is why everyone was looking at me like that. Lol, this biitch so fake!”

Shree looked at her, “What?”

“Someone played a prank, my fake nudes” She chuckled, “should have at least used the same model to morph my face onto.”

Shree was confused, “Neha what do you mean?”

“Lol, I’d kill to have a bod like that! But it’s not me. Someone played a dirty prank.”

“Karan has sent it to all-staff an hour ago.” Shree stated disappointingly.

“Karan? No! He can’t do this.” Neha said.

“What are you two talking about?” Karan asked as he came to Shree’s workstation.

“Send my fake nudes to the all-staff mail.” Neha stated.

“What? No! I did not-” Karan said in an alarmed voice.

“Shh!! Relax” Neha tried to calm him, “I know you would never do this. I trust you. Someone has tried to frame you, we will find out who, right Shree?”

“We have to.”

“Also, could you please delete this mail from Bhaiya’s account before he sees it? It’s kinda disgusting you know..”

“Do you know sir’s password? I don’t want to hack him.”

“I know. Also Chief’s account. Karan should be knowing the password.”

“I am not sure, he has never told me but let’s try.” Karan said.

“Alright.”

The trio went to Arjun’s cabin, logged into his system and deleted the mail.

Shree sighed, “Good that they are busy with the case and haven’t checked the mail yet. Now the challenging task, Rathore sir.”

They reached Sameer’s cabin and tried to log into his computer, “What is his lock-screen password? Guys?”

“Lemme type.” Neha said and quickly typed the password and logged in successfully.

Shree was surprised, “How did you know?”

“I saw him typing it once.”

“You should not be seeing it!” Karan said.

“Well, he typed in front of me, how could I not see? Are you jealous that your brother believes me more than you?”

Shree had just finished deleting the mail as it was not logged out when Sameer came in, “What are you three doing on my PC?”

“Getting my sick leave approved.” Neha lied.

“I approved it yesterday and mailed you a copy of the approval.” Sameer said.

“Yeah, but I accidentally deleted the mail and so had to resend it to myself from your email.” Neha smiled sheepishly.

“So you brought Shree to hack my PC?” Sameer asked sternly.

“No, no sir, I did not hack your PC. I was just-”

“Two of you will be doing everyone’s paperwork for this case and you will be given appropriate punishment once you come back for trying to hack my PC.” Sameer ordered.

“But chief-” Neha tried to intervene.

“Two cases paperwork, Shree and Karan, get back to work now.” Sameer glared at them and they left, “What is it about Neha?”

“I just said, sick lea-” Neha reasoned.

“Who are you lying to?” Sameer asked calmly, “What are you trying to hide?”

“Nothing chief, everything is fine! I have to leave now, it’s quite late, doc will be pissed. Toodles!” she waved her fingers and started leaving.

“Neha?”

“Nothing I can’t handle, bye chief!” She said from the door and walked out briskly.

~

Neha ran upstairs to her room and sat on the couch. Closed her eyes and tried to connect the dots. Vikram came in and sat in front of her, silently. After a few minutes she emptied her bag and started opening envelops. She kept all the official letters on a side and picked a small envelop which read “For Ms. Neha Rawte” in clear handwriting. She opened it, reread the letter and gave it to Vikram.

“When did you get this?”

“A week ago, probably one of the days when I was being drugged, I don’t remember exactly.”
“So what did this person do?”

“Circulated my fake nudes to the entire staff.”

“Motherf--” Vikram cursed quite loudly.

Neha’s phone buzzed, she answered, “Who’s this?”

The anonymous caller said, “I warned you about it.”

Neha asked plainly, “What do you want?”

“Vivaan. Where is he?”

“After all these years?”

“So you know where he is.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“I have a few clips, which I will be sharing tomorrow. If you tell me about Vivaan before that-”

“Meet me.”

“Tomorrow afternoon. Come alone. Address will be shared shortly.”

She disconnected the call. “Vivaan’s brother, I think. Says meet me alone.”

“What have you planned?”

“Time to test my babies, let them taste human flesh!” She said coldly.

“I like it!” Vikram replied.

~

Later that night,

Neha had taken her medicines and was preparing to sleep when Arjun barged in, “What is going on Neha? Care to explain?” he said rather loudly.

“Shhh.. calm down ACP sir.” Vikram silenced him, “You cannot talk to her like this.”

“You need not tell me-” Arjun responded angrily.

Vikram cut him short, “You’re too loud sir. Let’s go out and talk.” He took Arjun out of the room and made him sit. Handed him a glass of water, “What is your problem ACP sir? Could you not have a normal conversation with your sister? Why do you have to shout at her so much?”

“Mind your own business.” Arjun said irritated.

“Precisely, doing that.” Vikram said calmly, “If you cannot treat her with the love and respect that she deserves, you better not talk to her at all.”

“She said that?”

“No. I wish she could.”

Arjun walked into her room but she was fast asleep. He turned off the lights and closed the door. “Vikram, what is it that you know and I don’t?”

“You want me to share my client’s confidential information? Not happening.”

“Do you not think I should be knowing-”

“No, I will not share anything. If Neha wants to tell you, she will. Give her some time. If she does not want to, there’s no point in asking me.”

“Why are you like this?”

“We have sworn to protect our client’s confidential information, not even family members are allowed to know it. But just a caution, do not do anything that triggers her suicidal tendencies or substance abuse. Have a good night.” Vikram said and went to his room.

Arjun sat on the couch remembering her words, “I don’t drink because it’s fun, I drink to forget”…”See how beautiful this knife is, how sharp!” and cut her finger while tracing it.

The memories flooded his mind and he decided to have a conversation with Neha.

~

Next afternoon,

Neha and Vikram along with Rocky and Sandy reach the hotel, Rose Tria.

“Room 103, when I say babies, you come in with them.”

“Do the allow dogs in the hotel?”

“If they don’t, flash my badge.” Neha said and gave her ETF badge in his hands, “Only for emergency.”

“All the best!”

They checked blue-tooth device connectivity and she went in.

“Rivan Raichand?” Neha asked at the reception.

“Just a minute ma’am” the receptionist smiled and called him, “Room 103.”

“Thank you!” She smiled and left for his room.

“Finally, I see you in person!” Rivan said and asked her to sit.

“I did not expect this.” Neha said plainly.

“Neither did I. Now don’t waste any time and tell me where is Vivaan?”

“Why is there a single ‘a’ in your name while two in Vivaan’s?”

“My mom’s numerologist suggested.” Rivan said impatiently, “Tell me about Vivaan.”

~

Vikram was listening to their conversation through the earpiece. He added Arjun on the conversation call.

~

“Two years is a long time, I don’t really remember anything.”

“27th December 2012, his last message read I am taking a break, don’t worry about me, I’m fine, will contact when I feel better. Two years and counting, he never contacted us ever again. His university said he left for India saying that there was some emergency at home. He never returned. You were the last person he was seen with. Only you can tell where he is.”

“Oh! That is bad. But I can’t help you, I don’t know anything about him.” Neha said with a sad face.

“Stop lying. You know where he is! Please tell me. Please. My mother is dying to know about her son. I beg you. Please.”

“If she dies, she would probably see her son. I’m not really sure.”

Rivan sat upright and threatened, “I have certain video-clips. If you do not answer me now, these will be posted on the internet.”

Neha looked at him and laughed, “There you are, you as-hole! Your mother will be happy to know that both her sons messed with the wrong girl and pity, she’s going to lose her other and only son now.”

“What do you mean?” He said impatiently.

“Did your mother not teach you how to be respectful to women?”

“Don’t question my mother.”

“Really? Why not? I would like to ask her in person, what she really taught you.”

“You better shut up right now or one click and all these videos-”

She slapped him, “You know what? The only reason I killed your brother was because he was an as-hole and he deserved to die.”

“You killed my brother? Why?” Rivan cried.

“I didn’t want to, it was a pure act of self-defense. My bad, that I thought he was a good person, well he looked great. But he never really understood consent. That if a girl says she doesn’t want to have sex it is okay. It is her choice. Just because she is your girlfriend doesn’t make you entitled and doesn’t make her obligated to have sex with you. Your brother drugged me, raped me and also tried to kill me. I had to save myself so I accidentally stabbed him, 15 times I think. Then I had to get rid of the dead body, so I cut him into pieces and fed to the wild beasts of the forest. I dropped those messages to you and the University so that no one asks me. I had no clue about these sex tapes, but now you have brought them up, so face the consequences.”

Rivan stared at her bewildered, “You’re lying?”

“I wish I was. Now delete all those tapes and see my lawyer. You will be facing charges for Defamation under Section 499 and 500 of IPC.”

“You will be going to jail for killing my brother you wh-re!” He shouted and tried to hit her with a vase.

She dodged it, “I thought you learnt your lesson, but seems like you haven’t. My babies will teach you what your mother didn’t.”

Vikram was already in the elevator, waiting for her. He opened the door of the room and brought Rocky and Sandy in, he let off their leashes.

“Attack!” Neha pointed at Rivan and both her Rottweilers leaped on him and began scratching and biting.

~

ETF Office

“Rawte? Where are Shree, Chotu and Karan?” Sameer came into Arjun’s cabin and saw him sitting silent, “Rawte? Ar..Arjun? Is everything okay?”

Arjun hugged him tight.

“Are you okay?” Sameer asked again.

“Yes.” Arjun said softly.

“I’m here, if you need.” Sameer said and patted his back.

~

“ETF! Don’t move!” Chotu said as he came in the hotel’s room. Shree and Karan entered behind him with their guns drawn,

“Stop!” Neha said. Rocky and Sandy stopped biting Rivan.

“Neha, what are you doing here?” Shree asked, “How did you find him?”

“I have the same question.” Neha said, “He called me here. But how did you find out?”

“Long short, Karan’s phone helped.” Shree said.

“Eeeiihh!” Chotu shrieked as he saw Rivan scratched and bitten, “You do not do this Neha!”

“It is a part of their training. My Sandy is such a quick learner!” She picked up Sandy, wiped blood off her mouth with tissues and snuggled. “How many copies do you have of the clips?”

“Just this one.” Rivan winced in pain.

“Come on! Everyone has at least one back-up!” Shree said.

“He saved this clips in his mail. So there’s a copy there.” Rivan said.

“I should have checked the mail as well.” Neha sighed.

“Get up now! You will be going to jail for at least 5 years and pay 10 lacs as fine under Section 67A of the IT Act.”

“Should I really file a case? Vik?”

“Consult your lawyer.” Vikram said modestly, “We should be going home now, it’s your lunch time.”

“I don’t wanna eat boiled veggies anymore.” Neha cried, “There’s a nice restaurant down the lane, serves some great food!”

“Your dietician will be mad.” Vikram said, “I’ll make you some pasta tonight.”

“With lots of cheese!” Neha grinned.

Vikram ignored her and leashed Rocky, “We leave now?”

“Thanks a lot for helping me, Shree, Chotu, Karan! You may keep him in custody, I’ll let you know by evening about the case.” She told the trio.

Karan smiled, “Thank you for believing in me.”

“That’s what friends are for!”

“You will be going to the jail-” Rivan tried again.

“If you find your brother’s dead body, come back and we shall meet in the court. Or go back and tell your dying mother that she failed at her job, quite spectacularly.” Neha said bitterly and walked out.

Rawte Mansion

During dinner, Arjun was silently listening to Neha talk about some movie while Vikram was pulling her leg.

“I swear if you say that again, I’ll kill you!” Neha pointed her fork at him.

“Sweet.” Vikram grinned.

“Bhaiya?” Neha stared at him for a few minutes after she finished eating, “Is there something you want to say?”

“Yeah..um.. ” Arjun looked at her, “I forgot, I brought chocolates for you.” He pulled out two half-melted dark chocolate packets.

“WOW!!” Neha said excitedly taking the chocolate.

“You cannot eat chocolate in a detox diet.” Vikram said snatching the chocolate from her hands.

“Fu-k you and your detox diet.” Neha glared, “Gimme my chocolates or I’ll kill you for sure this time.”

“Go on!” Vikram mocked her.

Neha pouted and started talking sweetly, “Pwease gimme my shocola”

“Eh!! Don’t! Stop making that face.” Vikram grumbled.

Neha looked at him teary eyed, “Pwease, half of it?”

Vikram sighed and gave her a quarter, “Do not ask for more.”

“Okay! You’re spared ’cause you made me scrumptious pasta and my soul was satisfied after eating it.” Neha savoured the chocolate piece.

Arjun embraced her warmly, “I’m always here for you...”

“What?” Neha frowned.

“Good night.” Arjun said and went to his room.

Neha shrugged, “What do you think that was?”

“I don’t know.” Vikram replied.

Later that night, Neha was sitting in her room, chatting with a girl when her phone buzzed. She picked up, “Hello!”

“Hey there woman!” A deep voice spoke in a calm, concerned manner.

Neha smiled, “Alec?”

“Yes. I’m really sorry for whatever happened to you dear. Those as-holes have learnt their lesson, and will not hurt you again. I wanted to call you earlier but I wasn’t sure of what to say. How are you?” Sikander said.

“I’m good, alive!” Neha said.

“Nice! I can’t wait to see you darling. Take care. We meet soon.”

A week later,

After reaching ETF, Neha refused to get down the car, “I can’t do this. I don’t wanna be here. No. I can’t.” She panicked.

“Neha-” Arjun tried to talk.

“Leave me alone.” She said and turned away.

About 15 minutes later, Sameer came down in the parking lot, “Neha? Please come up.”

“I don’t-” She took a sharp breathe, “I don’t wanna be here, it’s very humiliating.”

“Neha, you have this job because you are a great cop. What others think of you is not important, what you think about yourself is. You are one of my best cops and I want you to be working for ETF. This is not just a job for you, you told me it was your passion. You decide what is more important.” Sameer said.

Neha remained thoughtful for some time, “You’re right Chief! Why should I care what the world thinks of me? Never did, never will.”

“That’s the spirit! So, you will be working in the Record Section. Take the last 10 years files of unsolved cases and categorize them into cases related to drugs, murder/homicide, kidnapping/abduction majorly and prepare a report.”

“Sounds interesting!” Neha nodded and started working in the Record Section.

At the end of the day, Neha was reporting her findings to Sameer when a teenager came in with a bouquet of wild flowers and asked Neha, “Are you Neha?”

“Yes, sweetheart!” She smiled at her.

“These are for you.” The girl said and ran away.

Neha looked at the flowers, “Seems like something my Myra would make for me.”

She read the note silently smiling, ‘I am sorry for what my people did to you. Please accept my apologies. I promise this would never happen again. I made this on my own, hope you like it. It is just like you, sweet, wild and beautiful. Love, Alec.’

“Who is Myra?” Sameer asked inquisitively.

“She was your classmate, right?” Arjun asked.

“Yeah, she’s the true and only love of my life.” Neha said dreamily, “It’s almost been seven years, three more and then we’ll be together again. I hope.”

“What is that?” Aisha asked.

“Oh, we have a pact, we had been dating when we were in school and we decided that ten years later, we would decide if we want to be together again or part ways. Meanwhile we explore ourselves.”

“You never told me she was your girlfriend!” Arjun said.

“We don’t out people like that. I had a crush on her since the day she joined our school in class 6. Its old school love! She brought me a flower everyday and I used to recite poetries to her. Man! I miss her so much!”

“Where is she now?”

“Australia. Quite a successful entrepreneur. Haven’t met her in last five years.”

“So she sent you these flowers?”

“Ah, no, this is my other lover who looks like the Greek god, Poseidon!”

“Another one? Looks are deceptive, be careful!” Arjun said.

“He helped me discard a dead-body without even asking my name, I know I can trust him.” Neha smiled and left.

Rawte Mansion,

“How was your day?” Vikram asked as they both sat for dinner.

“Better than I thought. I actually came across some really interesting cases.” Neha said as she took a helping of her favourite vegetables.

“Cool. Did you find something related to our case?”

“I found some tiny winy links.”

“That’s great. How much time do you think you need?”

“I’ve got this week, I’ll get something solid by the end of it.”

“Also, we need to setup a workstation. A secret place which no one can even think of.”

“We go there tomorrow and finalise.”

“Good.” Vikram smiled, “I’ll report Bull about the current scenario.”

“Schedule a video conf tonight.”

“On it.”

Neha was in her room, watching animated movie after dinner when her phone rang, “Hii!!”

“Hope you liked the flowers.” Alec said in his deep voice.

“I loved them. Thank you so much!” Neha said happily.

“Could we go for a date?” He asked.

“Sure, I’ve always enjoyed our dates. I’ll tell you in a day or two.” Neha said.

“I’ll be waiting. Take care.”

Next evening,

Neha drives Vikram to an apartment, “Let’s see if you like this one.” They take an elevator to reach the fifth floor.

“502. Aryan R.” Vikram reads the nameplate, “Your elder brother’s house?”

“An investment made by our father in his name.” She opened the door, “This is a safe place, the neighbours don’t interfere at all.”

“This is a penthouse! Are you sure I should be staying here?” Vikram asked looking around the house.

“Why not? There’s a secret room in here, where we could setup our base.” Neha said and led him into the room.

“Looks good!”

“So you wanna stay here or shall I show other houses?”

Vikram opened a window and felt the cool breeze, “This one works.”

“Cool!”
